There are nights when we speak to our ancestors.

And then there is Samhain — when we become still enough to listen.

This year, I am offering something very different from my traditional pre-recorded rituals.

On the sacred night of Samhain, we will gather live for a Silent Supper: an intimate ancestral ritual centred around one of the most profound practices associated with this season -  preparing a place at our own table for those who came before us.

Before we gather, you will prepare your own meal and create a place at your table for your ancestors and beloved dead. You may set photographs, heirlooms or meaningful objects nearby. Their place will be prepared as carefully as your own, with a plate, a drink and a portion of the meal you have made.

If there is a food they loved, a family recipe they prepared, a particular drink they enjoyed, or simply something that carries their memory, you may choose to include it.

Because on this night, we are not simply remembering them. We are setting a place for them.

Together, we will open sacred space, call upon the elements and honour the threshold of Samhain. We will acknowledge those whose names we know, those whose names have been forgotten, the ancestors of blood and lineage, and the beloved dead whose presence continues to live within us.

And then the speaking will stop.

We will enter the Silent Supper.

Each of us, in our own homes yet gathered together in ritual, will sit at our tables and eat our meals in silence.

No conversation.
No distractions.
No need to fill the stillness.

We simply eat.

We remember.

We listen.

We allow whatever wishes to arise :  memories, emotions, sensations, images, knowing, or perhaps simply the profound experience of sharing a meal in silence with those who are no longer physically seated beside us.

There is nothing you are required to experience.

The silence itself is the offering.

When our supper has ended, I will gently bring us back together to honour what has unfolded, give thanks to our ancestors and beloved dead, and formally close the ritual and sacred space.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF RITUAL

Unlike my other ritual offerings, The Silent Supper of Samhain will take place live. 

You will be invited to prepare your own sacred table and meal beforehand so that, when we gather, hundreds of kilometres may separate our tables yet we will enter the same ritual together.

For those who cannot attend at the scheduled time, the ritual will also be recorded, allowing you to create your Silent Supper privately at a time that feels right for you.

And together, in silence, we honour those who came before us.
